Foundations of Posture

Online Live

Movement & Understanding

This 30 hour online live series can be taken independently and is one of the courses offered in the Insight Teacher Training.

Deepen your yoga practice and develop an understanding of your body in movement and in stillness.

Movement

We practice standing, seated, and reclining poses with special focus on one area of the body. The course moves from the ground up in intelligently designed sessions that facilitate exploration and integration of concepts, movement, and awareness. Our practice and play will also explore vinyasas, including sun and moon salutations, and restorative yoga.

Understanding

The following morning we continue to explore and synthesize concepts with a 1 hour practice and 1.5 hours focused on the anatomy, biomechanics, and application of alignment in practice.  This morning session will include an opportunity to observe bodies, play with concepts, and design variations to adapt postures to all bodies and moods.

Whether you plan to teach or simply develop your own practice, the discussion, observation, and opportunity to play with the content is the component of the course where the information becomes integrated into your understanding. I’ve found that learning why we do what we do reinforces understanding and access to the physical practice in a truly profound manner. Combining experience with knowledge is my favorite and most effective way to teach.

Students will learn classical postures through practice, techniques, and discussion. Course work also includes limited independent written assignments meant to ensure understanding. Successful students will demonstrate postures in a way that reflects a balance of ease and effort. Students will learn to recognize indicators of distress and to offer modifications and adaptations that encourage students to recognize their own postural foundations and habits.

Live Online

We will be interacting on Zoom and class size is limited to ensure personalized attention and quality instruction. I’ve been so impressed with the classes I’ve led and participated in online. I have seen huge progress in form, understanding, and abilities. Some of the progress may even be faster than with in-person classes. Maybe the cues are more refined and clear or maybe students are naturally more responsive to verbal cues when they can't rely on their other senses as much. Whatever it is, I am actually very pleased with online class and think most participants are as well. Through online live classes I am still able to give each student some individual attention throughout class and a sense connection. A bonus of the online format is that you’ll have access to repeat the yoga class as well as options to make-up limited missed classes without missing content.
